« Italy is and wants to remain a host country, albeit aware of the inseparable bond between the principle of solidarity and security », Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni said at the UN General Assembly. « To consolidate our action, however, we need a comprehensive response to the migratory phenomenon” – he added – « from the EU and the entire international community. »
Gentiloni said that « the future of Europe is in Africa ». « Italy continues to promote a genuine partnership with African countries, and is investing in Africa, addressing the deep causes of migration, primarily economic and demographic inequalities. The integrated and structural approach is already giving the first positive results. «
According to him, the stability in Libya could be the key to establishing peace and security in Central Mediterranean. This stabilization is a priority objective, and it could be achieved through an inclusive dialogue within the framework of a Political Agreement, rejecting any military hypothesis. The Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni is “cautiously optimist” about reaching the goal of a Migration Compact in 2018.
Moreover, among the points that are being examined at the United Nations, Gentiloni announced a summit between all the main leaders, to ask for the United Nations’ help to return to Libya. He said: “We need it for the peace process, to stabilize the country and to the migration issue, because the conditions of refugees in Libya need to be monitored and improved on the human rights, and no one better than the UN can help us ».
