Eight months after the European Commission’sinitial proposal, the EU agreed on banning around ten product categories, which alone account for 70% of waste washed up in the oceans and on beaches. After 12 and a half hours of wrangling, negotiators from the EU Member States and the European Parliament have agreed to ban these many single-use plastic products in the future.
Still, even though the negotiators agreed on banning these products, the formal approval of both institutions, Parliament and the Council of the European Union, will be required.
The EU hopes to complete the legislative process of the text by spring 2019, with entry into force in 2021.
