Turkey deported a Dutch journalist, Ans Boersma, because she was accused from prosecutors in the Netherlands of being involved in a terrorism investigation. A Dutch prosecutor’s office spokeswoman said the reporter is a suspect in an investigation, but not for terrorism offenses.
The newspapers said in a statement that Boersma believes her deportation may be linked to a past relationship. Indeed, Boersma had a relation with a Syrian man suspected in the Netherlands of being a former member of a jihadist group.
The journalist was stopped while she was at the Bakirkoy immigration office in Istanbul to renew her stay permit, after having received in recent days an annual renewal of her press permit from the relevant government office. She was held overnight without being able to retrieve any personal belongings from her home.
